It doesn't matter to him, she realises. Why it happened - it doesn't matter to him, so there's no point in trying to explain it. He won't care that she can barely remember anything that happened, that it was Hellie's strength that went flooding through her, Hellie's fury that left those assholes in smoking ruin. He won't care because he's a sanctimonious asshole. Because he was never trafficked like Hellie, never given out like a party favour like she was. Because he never woke up to find that one of the only people he still loved in the world was already cold.

"Yes," she says, all cold. "They were going to throw her away like fucking trash and I would do it again, and again, and again, if I could."
