"Damn," Steve says in response, because he knows that he looks like shit.
He managed to take a shower that morning, but his hair is too long and
there's stubble on his chin that's edging toward full beard territory. He
didn't even know that he could grow a beard, and he might even be impressed
with himself under different circumstances.
He shuts the door after her and turns to watch her take off her shoes. She
looks like she just came from work and without the shoes she looks small.
Or maybe it's just the look on her face.
"Yeah, I get it," he says, clearing his throat as he glances over to the
tangle of bedding on the sofa. He hasn't been able to sleep in his own bed
because it's too big and empty and he's terrified of the day that he
doesn't smell like her anymore.
They stand there awkwardly for a moment and then, not knowing what else to
do, opens his arms to offer her a hug.
